Scott Dixon verslaat Will Power in strijd om de pole in Motegi

Scott Dixon heeft vanochtend vroeg de pole position behaald voor de eerste IndyCar-race in Motegi. Op het stratencircuit was de Ganassi-coureur in de Fast Six 0.027 seconden sneller dan Will Power. Zijn titelrivaal Dario Franchitti kwam niet verder dan een teleurstellende negende positie.

Power besloot in eerste instantie toe te kijken hoe zijn rivalen streden om de beste positie in de Fast Six. Scott Dixon reed een 1:38.391 en daar kwam Power uiteindelijk niet meer aan. In zijn snelste rondje kwam de titelkandidaat van Penske ruim twee honderdsten tekort op de pole position.

Rahal eindigde als derde, nadat hij zowel de snelste tijd had gereden in de groepsfase als in het kwalificatiegedeelte voor de snelste twaalf bolides. Ryan Briscoe start de race als vierde, gevolgd door James Hinchcliffe en Helio Castroneves. Daardoor stonden alle drie de Penske-coureurs in de top zes.

Charlie Kimball kwam net tekort voor een plaats in de Fast Six en start de race als zevende. James Jakes eindigde als achtste en was daarmee zelfs nog sneller dan kampioenschapsleider Dario Franchitti. De Schot kwam niet verder dan een teleurstellende negende startplaats en dat betekent zijn slechtste uitgangspositie op een stratencircuit sinds begin 2010.

Marco Andretti sloot de top tien af, gevolgd door Takuma Sato en debutant Joao Paulo de Oliveira. De rookie van Conquest laat hiermee onder andere EJ Viso, Sebastien Bourdais, Alex Tagliani, Oriol Servia en Ryan Hunter-Reay achter zich. Ook Tony Kanaan stelde hevig teleur met de 25e positie.
