Watkins Glen wil plek op IndyCar-kalender heroveren

Watkins Glen wil terugkeren op de IndyCar-kalender, zo bevestigden enkele officials van het circuit in de buurt van New York. Watkins Glen stond voor het laatst tussen 2005 en 2010 op de kalender, maar werd vorig jaar geschrapt vanwege tegenvallende toeschouwersaantallen.

Officials zijn met IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard in gesprek over een eventuele terugkeer in 2013. Mogelijk zou dit samen gaan met de NASCAR Truck-races. "Ik zou het geweldig vinden om de IndyCar terug te krijgen", vertelde circuitdirecteur Michael Printup. "Het is nog altijd een geweldig product, we zullen alleen nog moeten werken aan het financiële plaatje."

"Er bestaat geen twijfel over dat het prachtig zou zijn als we de IndyCar en de NASCAR Trucks in één weekend kunnen laten rijden. Ik weet dat er verschillende fans zijn voor deze klassen, maar aan de andere kant is het wel allebei racen. Daarvoor komen de mensen hier naartoe."
