Arie Luyendyk aangesteld als steward voor komende seizoen

Arie Luyendyk zal komend seizoen weer actief aanwezig zijn in de IndyCar Series. De Nederlander, die de Indianapolis 500 tweemaal op zijn naam schreef in 1990 en 1997, is één van de drie racestewards die zullen rapporteren aan Beaux Barfield, de race director.

Luyendyk zal naast zijn werkzaamheden als steward ook dienst doen als mentor en coach van de coureurs. "Had ik maar zulke hulp toen ik in 1985 debuteerde", zei Luyendyk. "Ik moest zelf alles uitzoeken en mijn weg zien te vinden. Alleen van Mario Andretti heb ik ooit minimaal advies gekregen."

"We hoeven de coureurs niet te vertellen hoe ze moeten rijden, maar we kunnen ze wel coachen op andere gebieden. Hoe ze bijvoorbeeld met bepaalde situaties het best om kunnen gaan, of hoe ze zichzelf rustig kunnen houden onder omstandigheden. Het is meer een mentale coaching. Wij hebben weer drie paar ogen meer om te zorgen dat alles op het circuit veilig blijft."

De collega-stewards van Luyendyk zullen Gary Barnard en Johnny Unser zijn. Barnard is werkzaam geweest in de ChampCar, terwijl Unser een voormalig IndyCar-coureur.
