Ryan Briscoe verovert pole position voor Indianapolis 500

Ryan Briscoe zal volgende week de Indianapolis 500 vanaf de pole position mogen vertrekken. In het eerste gedeelte van de kwalificatie was de Australische coureur gisteren slechts twee duizendsten sneller dan James Hinchcliffe. Ryan Hunter-Reay zal de eerste startrij completeren met de derde positie.

Tijdens het eerste gedeelte van de eerste kwalificatiedag werden de startposities 10 tot en met 24 bepaald. De snelste negen coureur zouden daarna nog strijden om de pole position. Ryan Briscoe had de voorlopige pole in handen, maar daarna kwam James Hinchcliffe nog. De coureur van Andretti Autosport was in de eerste drie ronden gemiddeld iets sneller dan Briscoe, maar liet een groter verval zien. Uiteindelijk kwam Hinchcliffe 0.0023 seconden tekort voor de pole.

Andretti Autosport is verder goed vertegenwoordigd aan de kop van de startgrid volgende week. Achter Hinchcliffe eindigden Ryan Hunter-Reay en Marco Andretti namelijk als derde en vierde. Will Power start op de tweede rij vanaf de vijfde positie, gevolgd door teammaat Helio Castroneves. Josef Newgarden was de hele week al snel in de trainingen en liet die snelheid ook in de kwalificatie zien. Hij start als beste rookie als zevende, gevolgd door het KV Racing-duo EJ Viso en Tony Kanaan. Beide reden geen tijd in de pole shoot-out.

Rubens Barrichello mag zeer tevreden terugkijken op zijn eerste kwalificatie op een oval. De Braziliaan haalde de top negen net niet, maar start op de vierde rij als tiende. Opvallend waren de slechte kwalificaties van het Ganassi-team. Charlie Kimball was de beste coureur op de veertiende stek, gevolgd door teamgenoten Scott Dixon en Dario Franchitti.

Waar het de afgelopen week tijdens de trainingen erg rustig bleef qua crashes, was het gisteren erg druk voor het rescue-team. Bryan Clauson, Oriol Servia en Ed Carpenter crashten allen en zullen vandaag nog een poging moeten wagen om op de startgrid voor de Indy 500 te komen. Naast dit trio zullen onder andere ook Sebastien Bourdais en Mike Conway nog aan de slag moeten.
