Hunter-Reay profiteert van fout Power en pakt kampioenschap

Ryan Hunter-Reay is de nieuwe IndyCar-kampioen. De Amerikaan verlengde voorafgaande aan het weekend op de Auto Club Speedway in Fontana zijn contract bij Andretti en dat vertrouwen beloonde hij in de wedstrijd. Hunter-Reay profiteerde optimaal van een fout van kampioenschapleider Will Power.

Power toucheerde in de 56ste ronde de muur aan de buitenkant van bocht 2. Zulke fouten mag je niet maken, toonde de Australiër zich na afloop zelfkritisch. Toch maakte hij nog lange tijd kans op de titel. Hunter-Reay moest in de top vijf eindigen en slaagde daar pas in de slotfase in door een uitvalbeurt van Alex Tagliani en een crash van Takuma Sato.

De winst ging naar Ed Carpenter, die voor het tweede opeenvolgende jaar triomfeerde in de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen. Dario Franchitti deed met een tweede plaats afstand van zijn troon en Scott Dixon bezette de laatste trede op het podium.
