Conway en Pagenaud opvallende winnaars in Detroit

Mike Conway en Simon Pagenaud hebben gezegevierd in het dubbele raceweekend in Detroit. Twee opvallende winnaars, aangezien Conway pas op het laatste moment een stoeltje bij Dale Coyne bemachtigde en voor Pagenaud betrof het zijn eerste triomf in de IndyCar.

Conway was op zaterdag veel te sterk voor de rest. De Brit nam in ronde 44 van de 70 de leiding over van Ryan Hunter-Reay en finishte met bijna 13 seconden voorsprong op diezelfde Hunter-Reay. Justin Wilson, teamgenoot van Conway, versloeg Scott Dixon nipt op weg naar de laatste plek op het podium.

Op zondag ging de glorie naar Pagenaud, die zijn team Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports en zichzelf de eerste overwinning schonk. "Dit is ongelooflijk, ik weet niet hoe we dit geflikt hebben." James Jakes behaalde zijn beste resultaat met een tweede plek, voor Conway.

In het kampioenschap delen Helio Castroneves en Marco Andretti de koppositie met ieder 206 punten. Titelverdediger Hunter-Reay bezet de derde plek met 191 punten.
