Power pakt zege in Sonoma na pit-incident met Dixon

Will Power heeft voor het eerst dit jaar een overwinning geboekt. Op het circuit van Sonoma klopte hij Justin Wilson en Dario Franchitti in een enerverende race. Het moment van de wedstrijd was de pitstop van Scott Dixon in ronde 64.

Dixon leidde de race en Power zat vlak achter hem. Samen doken ze de pits in, waarbij Power precies voor Dixon zijn stop maakte. Dixon was eerder klaar en spoot weg. Daarbij nam hij de pitcrew van Power niet in acht, want hij kegelde pardoes een monteur omver.

Uit herhalingen bleek dat Dixon de band die de betreffende monteur droeg toucheerde en dat had een kettingreactie tot gevolg, met meer crew-leden die door het een of ander geraakt werden. De wedstrijdleiding kon niet anders dan een drive through-penalty uitdelen aan Dixon.

Power wist Wilson achter zich te houden en stormde naar de zege, zijn eerste van 2013. Hij is al de tiende winnaar dit jaar. Helio Castroneves finishte als zevende en leidt nog in de tussenstand. Hij heeft 39 punten meer dan Dixon.
