15-jarige Esmee Kosterman in de race voor een F4-stoeltje

Acht talentvolle jonge vrouwen zijn de afgelopen dagen op Paul Ricard bezig geweest in een trainingskamp van de FIA Girls On Track, gesteund door de Ferrari Driver Acedemy. Één van de deelnemers is de Nederlandse Esmee Kosterman. Vandaag is de laatste dag in dit competitieprogramma en de beste vier zullen worden geselecteerd voor de finaleronde vlakbij het hoofdkwartier van Ferrari in Maranello. De vrouwen krijgen naast het rijden in een Formule 4, ook technische curcussen met engineers van Ferrari en Pirelli. De vorige ronde was in oktober en toen moesten de dames zich bewijzen in een kart.

''Dit is een andere, maar belangrijke fase in dit ontwikkelingsprogramma voor vrouwen'', zegt voormalig rally-kampioen and president van de FIA Women in Motorsport Comission Michele Mouton. ''Sommige rijders hebben al ervaring in een Formule 4-wagen en voor anderen wordt het weer een nieuwe belevenis. We hopen veel snelheid, en ook belangrijk, veel progressie en toewijding te zien, acterend op het hoogste niveau.''

Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto heeft al eerder aangegeven in januari van dit jaar dat binnen hun academie er meer diversiteit moet komen. De Italiaan zei toentertijd: ''Als we kijken naar toekomstige talenten voor Ferrari, dan is dit programma ook bedoeld voor vrouwen. Vrouwen moeten ook kunnen deelnemen. Daar werken we aan en hopelijk lukt alles zo snel mogelijk.''

En inmiddels is duidelijk dat zowel zij als Juju Noda niet door zijn naar de laatste vier. De andere twee afvallers zijn Toni Naudé (Zwitserland) en Jessica Edgar (Groot Brittanië).
De finalisten zijn Julia Ayoub (Brazilië), Antonella Bassani (Brazilië), Doriane Pin (Frankrijk) en Maya Weug (Nederland/België)
