Jenson Button en Noaki Yamamoto winnen Super GT race op Sugo

Jenson Button en Noaki Yamamoto hebben de leiding in het Super GT-kampioenschap overgenomen van Nick Cassidy en Rio Hirakawa na een knappe overwinning op Sportsland Sugo.

De Britse Honda-ambassadeur reed samen met zijn Japanse partner de Honda NSX van Team Kunimutsu naar de eerste plaats. Geheel zonder slag of stoot verliep deze excursie overigens niet. Bij het inhalen van een groep GT300-auto's verloor Button de auto, maakte een forse uitstap in het gras en beschadigde hierbij de koeling van zijn auto.

"Het was een moment van angst. Naoki had mij al voor de wedstrijd verteld dat ik op moest passen buiten de racelijn. Deze baan wordt niet zo heel erg vaak gebruikt en daardoor ligt er natuurlijk veel troep aan de zijkant van de racelijn", vertelde de gelukkige Button.

Button en Yamamoto, vorig jaar de teamgenoot van Pierre Gasly in het Super Formula-kampioenschap, hebben in het kampioenschap twaalf punten voorsprong op Tomoki Nojiri (teamgenoot Vandoorne in 2016) en Takuya Izawa. Het Super GT-kampioenschap kent nog twee wedstrijden dit jaar. Op 21 oktober rijdt men op het circuit van Autopolis (sponsor Benetton in 1991), daarna sluit men het seizoen op 11 november af op de Twin Ring Motegi.

Beide races zijn overigens te volgen op het NISMO-kanaal van YouTube, voorzien met Engels commentaar van Sam Collins.

Van harte Button eindelijk weer eens een overwinning met Honda alsof het een eeuwigheid moest gaan duren.

Ex-wereldkampioen en ook nog een dot ervaring als het gaat om mechanische kennis.
