Kobayashi klaargezet als vervanger Nakajima voor Le Mans

Kamui Kobayashi is door Toyota opgedragen als vervanger van Kazuki Nakajima voor de vierentwintig uur van Le Mans. Nakajima crashte op donderdag zwaar tijdens de vrije training voor de zes uur van Spa Francorchamps, en brak daarbij een ruggenwervel. De oud-coureur van Williams heeft een wonder nodig om deel te kunnen nemen aan de race in Frankrijk.

Teambaas Rob Leupen zei het volgende: "Kazuki is zeker voor de komende tijd uitgeschakeld. Wij zullen hem helpen en proberen zo snel mogelijk weer fit te krijgen. Er is een wonder nodig om hem te laten racen in Le Mans, maar je kunt die mogelijkheid niet helemaal afschrijven. Als wij Kamui in ieder geval nu naar Europa halen, dan kan hij zich alvast voorbereiden. Wij verwachten dat Kazuki weer mee kan doen vanaf de WEC-race op de Nürburgring in augustus."

Eind mei zal Toyota op het Circuit de la Sarthe testen en volgens Motorsport.com zal Kobayashi tijdens die dagen achter het stuur van de LMP1-bolide kruipen.

De toekomstige auto van Kobayashi kende een lastige kwalificatie voor de race op Spa Francorchamps dit weekend. Anthony Davidson en Sebastian Buemi reden de zesde tijd, 2,7 seconden achter de nummer één, maar waren daarmee wel de snelste Toyota van het veld.
