'BMW smeedt plannen voor LMP1-project'

BMW keert mogelijk in 2017 terug in de 24 uur van Le Mans met een heuse LMP1-bolide. Dat meldt Auto Motor und Sport. Er wordt al langer gespeculeerd dat de Duitse autofabrikant een LMP1-project overweegt, maar volgens AMuS is het meer dan een gerucht.

De technologische voorschriften zijn BMW op het lijf geschreven. Ten eerste omdat het merk geen globaal autosportprogramma heeft, met de DTM als voornaamste speerpunt. En ten tweede omdat BMW vooruitstrevend op gebied van elektrische aandrijving is. De LMP1-reglementen zijn dusdanig dat ze innovatieve technologie die op normaal vervoer toepasbaar is aanmoedigen.

Het enige probleem is alleen nog de financiering. BMW heeft voor de komende drie jaar trouw beloofd aan de DTM en de afdeling motorsport beschikt niet over een budget om een LMP1-auto te ontwikkelen. Daardoor zal het op zijn vroegst in 2017 dat BMW aan de 24 uur van Le Mans meedoet.

De F1 probeert iets te zijn wat het nooit was. F1 was nooit groen en het was geen show, F1 was de beste coureurs in de snelste auto's die op zondag zo hard mogelijk gingen om het beste resultaat te halen.

    Logisch met Audi, Porsche, Toyota en Nissan in deze klasse een mooie kans. Zeker met het aanstaande vertrek van Audi!

    Het WEC sluit beter aan bij de visie en techniek van BMW dan de F1. Maar wanneer de grootste concurrenten (Mercedes en Audi) zich in de F1 bevinden, is dat eigenlijk ook de plek waar BMW moet zijn.

      Tja en wat is nu eigenlijk beter?

      Persoonlijk vind ik het concept van het WEC momenteel beter qua 'merk branding' dan de F1.

      Eigenlijk heeft Lars wel gelijk. Je moet merken zoals BMW, Mercedes en Audi in de WEC hebben (duurzaamheid etc), en merken zoals Ferrari, Lambourghini, McLaren etc (sportauto's, rauwe snelheid) in de F1 stoppen :-)

      De WEC ging altijd om zuinigheid, iets wat nu onder de marketingsterm "groen" tot uiting komt. Als F1 de successen uit het verleden wilt terug hebben dan moeten ze eerst in zien dat de F1 nooit "groen" kan zijn. F1 moet hoogstaande technologie als doel nemen, want dat is het altijd geweest. De motor is een technologisch wonder en de aerodynamica is vooruitstrevend, maar daar wordt nooit overgesproken. Voor automakers is WEC zeer interessant omdat de WEC qua marketing en vrijheid qua motor reglement veel aantrekkelijker is. Ook is de WEC veel klantvriendelijk dan F1, tijdens de WEC evenementen mag als toeschouwer bijna overal komen voor een zeer lage prijs. Terwijl bij de F1 soms 5x keer zoveel betaalt en alleen een plekje krijgt er verder niks te zien krijg. De F1 moet de fan experience zsm verbeteren en de vooruitstrevende techniek gaan belichten ipv met de WEC en Formule E gaan concurreren als "groene" sport.

      De F1 probeert niet groen te zijn, de F1 moet voorop lopen in ontwikkeling. En waar het in de vorige eeuw om ging om steeds grotere en sterkere motoren te ontwikkelen (olie crisis eind jaren 70 begin jaren 80 en mede daardoor opkomst Turbo's daar gelaten) is het nu de tendens om steeds kleinere, zuinigere en sterkere motoren te bouwen. Dat is de ontwikkeling en vooruitgang en de F1 ontleent daaraan zijn bestaansrecht! Het is dus niet de vraag of de F1 dit moest doen, het is een onontkoombaar feit.
