Toyota raapt zich bijeen na teleurstelling

De 24 uur van Le Mans kreeg zondag een even bizarre als dramatische ontknoping. De leidende Toyota met startnummer 5 viel bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde stil, waardoor Porsche nog met de zege aan de haal kon gaan. Dat Toyota met de auto met startnummer 6 nog de tweede plek voor zich opeiste was een schrale troost voor het Japanse merk.

Toyota laat zich hierdoor niet uit het veld slaan en keert volgend jaar terug. Voorzitter Akio Toyoda: "We hebben de bittere smaak van verlies nog in de mond, maar we zullen er volgend jaar weer staan in het World Endurance Championship en in Le Mans. We zullen herboren aan de start verschijnen in 2017. Kijk dan maar uit voor de 'geslagen hond' Toyota, het gevecht is nog lang niet over."

Teampresident Toshio Sato: "Ik ben enorm trots op de inspanningen van ons team. Na het tegenvallende seizoen 2015 hebben we in korte tijd een indrukwekkend nieuw chassis ontwikkeld. Ik feliciteer Porsche met de overwinning. Ik heb geen woorden om onze emoties te omschrijven. Het was hartverscheurend, maar we komen sterker en meer vastberaden terug."

    Ik dacht serieus even dat die teambaas een hartaanval zou krijgen. Maar ja, The bullshit stops when the flag drops.

    Wel mooie strijdvaardige woorden. Ik kijk nu alweer uit naar volgend jaar.

    Het was inderdaad hartverscheurend.
    Ik had echt te doen met die mannen van Toyota, had het ze absoluut gegund.

    Juist!

    Doorgaan tot die overwinning er is. In de Toyota TS050 zit veel potentie. Er viel niks te halen voor Porsche en Audi. Maar Porsche heeft nu neem ik aan al zijn geluk verbruikt door als eerste over de finish te rijden.

      Duits onderonsje, met Toyota Motorsport uit Köln....
