Ullrich stopt als autosportbaas van Audi

Wolfgang Ullrich staat zijn functie als autosportdirecteur bij Audi na dit jaar af aan Dieter Gass en gaat aan het einde van 2017 helemaal met pensioen. Dat maakte hij tijdens het World Endurance Championship-weekend in China bekend.

Ullrich is al sinds 1993 werkzaam voor Audi en hij was de geestelijk vader van het LMP1-programma van het Duitse merk. Audi kondigde recent aan om na dit jaar de stekker uit het LMP1-project te trekken. Het ideale moment voor een reorganisatie binnen Audi Sport.

"Dit stond al enige tijd in de planning", stak de 66-jarige Ullrich van wal. "We moesten het nog overleggen met het bestuur en het is nog niet officieel bekrachtigd, maar we gaan wel die richting op. Daardoor hebben we een jaar om Audi Sport voor te bereiden op andere tijden."

"Hopelijk staat Dieter er dan niet alleen voor zodra ik weg ben." Gass is momenteel nog DTM-baas bij Audi en fungeerde jarenlang als de rechterhand van Ullrich. Op dit moment bestaat Audi Sport nog uit 370 man personeel, maar daar zullen banen verdwijnen.

Zonde van zo'n groot merk dat ze nu in de marge van de autosport gaan ploeteren terwijl er een paar jaar terug nog aan een F1 project gedacht werd.
