Moed zakt Toyota nog niet in de schoenen

Toyota laat zich niet ontmoedigen nu een nieuwe poging om de 24 uur van Le Mans te winnen is mislukt. Vorig jaar strandde de leidende auto van het Japanse merk in het zicht van de haven, dit keer was het al eerder gedaan met de winstkansen. De snelheid om te zegevieren was er wel, maar de techniek liet de autofabrikant andermaal in de steek.

Dit tot grote spijt van Toyota-voorzitter Akio Toyoda. "We zeggen sorry tegen onze coureurs. We hadden hen gevraagd om voluit te racen in Le Mans en ze beloofd dat het materiaal dat wel aan zou kunnen, maar die belofte hebben we niet waar kunnen maken. Dat is betreurenswaardig en alle engineers, monteurs en leveranciers zullen er net zo over denken."

"Het spijt me ook voor onze fans, die net als wij geloofden in de zege op Le Mans. We streven echter naar de dag dat we wel deze race op onze naam kunnen schrijven, zodat we met een lach op onze gezicht hierop terug kunnen kijken. Voor nu rest niets anders dan Porsche te feliciteren en te bedanken. Ze erkennen ons als rivaal en daar zijn we dankbaar voor."

LMP1 is bijna niet meer levensvatbaar met 5 (zelfs 4 bij ander WEC races) wagens dit jaar.
Ze moeten toch minimaal richting 10, 15 auto`s gaan.
Kosten verlagen, zodat ook andere fabrikanten instappen.

Het was weer een bijzondere race deze 24 Heures de Le Mans....
Erg jammer voor Toyota vind ik, gunde ze de overwinning van harte. Maar een klasse met 5 auto's is uiteraard niet voor herhaling vatbaar, en gewoon niet vol te houden. Dus ik ben benieuwd hoe dat volgend jaar dan zal gaan.....wel of geen LMP1 ;)
