Toyota geeft signaal af richting het WEC-project

Toyota lijkt van plan om het World Endurance Championship niet te verlaten, ook al stapt concurrent Porsche na dit jaar wel uit de LMP1-klasse. Het Japanse merk heeft vandaag echter een nieuwe voorzitter voor het WEC-team benoemd. Hisatake Murata is met onmiddellijke ingang aangesteld als president van Toyota Gazoo Racing en Toyota Motorsport GmbH.

Een duidelijk signaal dat Toyota het WEC-project voorlopig nog niet staakt. Immers, waarom zouden ze een nieuwe voorzitter benoemen als ze van plan zijn de stekker uit het project te trekken? Murata: "Ik ben trots op mijn nieuwe positie binnen Toyota Motorsport GmbH. Sinds het begin van ons hybride LMP1-project heb ik een sterke band met leden van Toyota Motorsport opgebouwd en ik kijk ernaar uit om nog nauwer samen te werken om op alle vlakken successen te boeken. Ik wil Toshio Sato bedanken voor zijn leiderschap en wens hem het beste in zijn nieuwe functie."

      Als ze die al winnen kunnen ze nooit zeggen dat ze Porche hebben weten te verslaan, weinig glans dus bij een eventuele titel.

      Nou ja helaas, zie ze niet de capaciteit hebben om de Europese fabrikanten te verslaan. Japan is in de gehele auto branche het aan het afleggen.

      Niet om het een of ander, maar wat dacht je van de industrie van motorfietsen, waar zijn de grote Europese fabrikanten gebleven op een enkeling na, het is Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, en o.a Kawasaki, die markt veroverd hebben, ook in de racerij.

    Wellicht omdat de hoge mannen van Toyota dievnieuwe voorzitter willen omdat men van koers wil wijzigen? Bovendien past Formula E prima in het Toyota straatje m.b.t. de techniek.

    Anderzijds is het voor Toyota nu makkelijker om een flink aantal Le Mans overwinningen te halen nu de grootste concurrenten Audi en Porsche uit de WEC weg zijn/gaan.

    Maar dat Toyota nou een "signaal afgeven aan de WEC" dat ze willen blijven vindt ik een beetje vergezocht als je het basseerd op een wisseling van voorzitter... sterker nog, dat brengt wellicht juist meer kans op een vertrek.

      Volgens mij heeft Toyota nog altijd geen volledig elektrische auto, dus vooralsnog zou ik niet weten waarom het juist in hun plan zou vallen. Overigens zouden ze het evt. ook tegelijkertijd kunnen doen.

      Er zijn nog maar weinig automakers met een volledig electrische auto. Die doen ook gewoon mee aan FE. Het is immers nog grotendeels een spec klasse...

    Het is voor Toyota enerzijds een zegen dat ze nu de enige zijn die de snelste klasse in de endurance competitie vertegenwoordigen want het enige wat ze hoeven doen is de Lmp1 teams voor blijven. Diezelfde Lmp1's worden trouwens sneller want de reglementen van volgend jaar staan aerodynamische ontwikkeling en andere technische snufjes veel meer toe, dus denk ik Toyota daar nog best wel een hele kluif aan zal hebben. Verder kunnen ze het team afslanken want met 2 auto's aan de 6 uur van Spa verschijnen lijkt mij overbodig. Dat is dus een extra kostenbesparing.
    Ik vraag me af hoe het nu zal vergaan met de wijzigingen aan het reglement die eerder dit jaar zijn geïnitieerd en door zowel Porsche als Toyota ondertekend zijn.
    Mijn voorspelling is dat Toyota nog eenmaal Le Mans aandoet en het waarschijnlijk gaat winnen. Daarna kijken ze aan wie in 2019 aanschuift als 2de team. Bij Peogeot denken ze er nog steeds serieus over na maar pas vanaf 2020 wanneer de nieuwe reglement zou ingaan. Stel dat ze die al in 2019 gaan implementeren dan heb je kans dat Toyota nog langer blijft, dus na 2018 om samen met Peogeot serieus te competeren.
    Dus samenvattend zie ik het zo: op korte termijn is dit goed nieuws voor de WEC. Op langer termijn staat alles (nog steeds) op losse schroeven (wat betreft de Lmp1-h klasse).
    Er is nog een derde scenario mogelijk: Peogeot wil haar elektrische aandrijflijn doordrijven via de WEC competitie en wil veel meer elektrische aandrijving zien. Dan zou je kunnen denken aan 1 uur van de volledige 24 uur op puur elektrisch vermogen rijden of zoiets dergelijks. Dat zou Peogeot wellicht ook veel meer willen doen commiteren.
    We zullen zien!
