Penske voelt wel wat voor een Le Mans-avontuur

Team Penske maakt dit seizoen in het IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship zijn rentree in de endurance-racerij, maar de dromen van teambaas Roger Penske reiken al verder. De Amerikaan hoopt dat hij in de nabije toekomst met de Acuri DPi's kan deelnemen aan de 24 uur van Le Mans.

Penske is een grootheid in Amerika en was in het verleden al succesvol met een eigen team in de American Le Mans Series. De 24 uur van Daytona van dit weekend luidt het begin van een avontuur in het IMSA-kampioenschap in voor Team Penske. De renstal komt met twee DPi-wagens van Acura uit in de hoogste klasse.

Als het aan Penske ligt gaan het World Endurance Championship en de 24 uur van Le Mans dat soort auto's ook toestaan. "Het zal interessant worden, maar dat ligt nog een aantal jaren voor ons. Ik denk echter dat de groei van de DPi een voorbode is. Als er ooit een kans komt om deel te nemen zullen we die dan ook zeker niet laten liggen."

"Ik ben diep onder de indruk van wat ze in de IMSA voor elkaar hebben gekregen met de DPi's. Ik neem mijn pet af voor IMSA-president Scott Atherton en hoop dat dit een voorbode is voor ons om naar Le Mans te gaan. Zodra ze zien hoeveel auto's er aan de start staan, het aantal fabrikanten dat erbij betrokken is en de kosten die erbij komen kijken, die minimaal zijn vergeleken met wat we bij Le Mans hebben gezien in het verleden…"

Dat is goed nieuws voor Juan Pablo Montoya, die eerder liet doorschemeren te wachten op een Le Mans-project van Penske. "Voor mij geldt dat ik niet weet ik ooit deel zal nemen aan de 24 uur van Le Mans. We moeten afwachten wat er gebeurt met de reglementen en of er een kans bestaat dat Penske zich op een dag inschrijft voor dat evenement. Het lijkt me wel leuk om een keertje te doen."

  Dik 60 kg aangekomen? Dat zal toch wel meevallen, als Juan Pablo gemotiveerd is voor Le Mans gaat hij vast extra in training en volgt hij een sportdieet op maat. ;)
