Sirotkin in 2019 waarschijnlijk actief in het WEC

Voormalig Williams coureur Sergey Sirotkin gaat volgend jaar waarschijnlijk in ieder geval twee keer uitkomen voor SMP Racing LMP1 in het FIA World Endurance Championship. Hij zou Jenson Button vervangen, die de races in Sebring en Spa aan zich voorbij moet laten gaan. Sirotkin verwacht ook dat hij Le Mans rijdt, terwijl Button dan wel weer terug is.

"Het World Endurance Championship is niet eens een optie, maar het is bijna een verplichting. Ik kan je bijna garanderen dat je me volgend jaar in het WEC zult zien racen", zegt Sirotkin tegenover Autosport.

"Ik denk ook dat het helder is in welk team en welke auto dat zal zijn. Misschien zelfs vanaf Sebring en daarna, maar hoe dan ook Le Mans", aldus Sirotkin, die vorig jaar al zijn Le Mans-debuut maakte in een SMP Racing Dallara LMP2-auto. Hij eindigde als zestiende, maar hij verwacht een andere ervaring in de LMP1.

"Het is een compleet ander verhaal ten opzichte van de Formule 1, dus ik denk niet dat het me heel erg gaat helpen. Dat is denk ik waarom ik voor Le Mans een aantal races rijdt, om de auto beter te leren kennen en om te begrijpen waar ik de aandacht op moet leggen en dergelijke."
