Alonso zet Toyota bovenaan in natte tweede vrije training op Spa

Toyota heeft de orde hersteld tijdens de tweede vrije training voor de 6 uur van Spa-Francorchamps. Fernando Alonso zorgde ervoor dat de TS050 met startnummer 8 de eerste positie bezette in de verregende sessie, voor de zusterauto met startnummer 7. Racing Team Nederland eindigde op P5 in de LMP2-klasse.

Daar waar de eerste training in België nog op een droge baan werd verreden, kon dat van de tweede sessie niet gezegd worden. Op de natte baan werd de training tot vier keer toe onderbroken met een rode vlag. Vlak voor de derde rode vlag noteerde Alonso in zijn Toyota een 2:19.483, waarmee hij 1,4 seconden sneller was dan Mike Conway in de tweede Toyota.

In de eerste vrije training moest Toyota nog genoegen nemen met de derde en vierde plaats achter de twee bolides van SMP Racing. In de tweede training moest het Russische team genoegen nemen met P3. De bolide van onder andere Stoffel Vandoorne reed op zo'n twee seconden van Alonso de derde tijd. De andere bolide van het team, die in de eerste training nog de snelste was, crashte al vroeg in de sessie.

Wederom prima sessie Nederlanders in LMP2

DragonSpeed reed de snelste tijd van de tweede training in de LMP2-categorie. Op de derde, vierde en vijfde posities waren de Nederlanders terug te vinden: op P3 was het Ho-Pin Tung met Jackie Chan DC Racing, op P4 Job van Uitert met G-Drive Racing en op de vijfde plaats was het Racing Team Nederland, dat Nyck de Vries, Frits van Eerd en Giedo van der Garde inzet.

In de LMGTE Pro werd de snelste tijd wederom gereden door Aston Martin. Deze keer was het de #95 van Marco Sorensen en Nicki Thiim, nadat het vanochtend de #97 was. Bij de LMGTE Am's was het wederom een Porsche op de eerste positie: Dempsey Proton Racing noteerde in de verregende sessie de snelste tijd met Christian Ried, Riccardo Pera en Matt Campbell.
