Red Bull weet nog niet of het Aston Martin gaat steunen in WEC

Aston Martin gaat zich vanaf 2020/21 mengen in de strijd om de algemene zeges in het WEC, dat vanaf die jaargang onder een 'hypercar-reglement' gaat opereren. Of Red Bull zich aan dat project gaat verbinden, is nog onzeker.

Afgelopen vrijdag werd bij de vergadering van het World Motor Sport Council bekend dat de beoogde reglementswijzigingen voor het WEC-seizoen 2020/21 doorgang zullen vinden. Vanaf dat seizoen zal de klasse geen LMP1 meer kennen, maar een meer open 'hyper sport'-klasse. Hieraan mogen van hypercars afgeleide bolides deelnemen en het doel is om meer fabrikanten richting de hoogste klasse te lokken.

Aston Martin was later die dag de eerste fabrikant die zich committeerde aan de nieuwe reglementen van de klasse. Het team wil mee gaan doen met een op de Valkyrie gebaseerde bolide. Deze Valkyrie werd door Aston Martin en Red Bull Advanced Technologies ontwikkeld en is ontworpen door Adrian Newey, de man die ook de drijvende ontwerpkracht was achter de bolides waarmee Red Bull Racing vier jaar op rij kampioen werd in de Formule 1.

Marko laat zich niet uit over steun aan Aston Martin

Aston Martin is ook al enkele jaren aan Red Bull Racing verbonden als sponsor. Het lijkt dan ook een logische optelsom dat de energiedrankjesmaker zich zal verbinden aan het WEC-project van de Britse autofabrikant, maar adviseur en talentscout Helmut Marko vertelde aan de Salzburger Nachrichten dat daar nog niets over besloten is. "Daar is het nog te vroeg voor."

Vooralsnog lijken de nieuwe reglementen op veel goedkeuring te kunnen rekenen. Aston Martin kondigde dus aan haar intrede te gaan doen in de hoogste klasse op Le Mans, terwijl Toyota niet veel later volgde met de bekendmaking dat ze ook met de nieuwe reglementen betrokken blijven in het WEC. Bij monde van Zak Brown liet McLaren zich ook al ontvallen dat ze wel oren hebben naar een terugkeer op Le Mans.

Afgezien daarvan lijkt het me een goede zaak om de LMP1 klasse af te schaffen.
Eerst was het Audi die daar alles won (8 winsten in 9 jaar, een keer is Renault er voor terecht gekomen), toen zij stopten was het Porsche (3 jaar op rij), die zijn ook gestopt en nu is het Toyota die alles wint.

Je weet natuurlijk niet wat andere fabrikanten achter de schermen uitvoeren, maar ik denk wel dat het een voordeel kan zijn als je er al zo vroeg mogelijk bij bent.......

Denk dat Toyota en Aston Martin gewoon een aantal keren "chicken" moeten roepen naar de andere hypercar fabrikanten en dan heb je ze zo om ;)

  Mag jij raden welke teams er vroeger na de winnaars kwamen….
  
  Vorig jaar was het even spannend, want toen reed een LMP2 auto lange tijd aan kop. Ja, een LMP2 auto was dus sneller dan alle LMP1 autos, met uitzondering van fabrieksteam Toyota, die door een laatste sterke stint toch de algehele winst wisten te behalen.
  LMP1 is gewoon als raceklasse nog ongezonder dan de F1. En daar moet dus iets nieuws voor komen.
  De Hypercar klasse is dan wel een hele mooie optie. Ik hop dat andere fabrikanten ook mee gaan doen. Aston Martin Valkyrie, Toyota GR Super Sport, McLaren Senna/P1 (of de opvolger hiervan), Mercedes AMG Project One, Ferrari LaFerrari (of zijn opvolger), een Koenigsegg, een Porsche opvolger van de 918 Spyder.

Newey moet eerst de auto maar eens werkend krijgen en als hij het niet meer heeft dan hoop ik dat er een protegé klaar staat binnen het design ontwerpteam.
