Privateer SMP Racing trekt zich terug uit LMP1 voor seizoen 2019/20

SMP Racing zal komend seizoen niet op de grid staan tijdens het FIA WEC. Het team heeft zich teruggetrokken uit het seizoen 2019/20, dat in september van start gaat.

Afgelopen maand maakte de FIA nog de voorlopige inschrijflijst van het aankomende WEC-seizoen bekend en daarop was de naam SMP Racing gewoon nog aanwezig. De verwachting was dat ze door zouden gaan met de BR Engineering BR1-AER's, maar daar is dus toch van afgezien. Tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans, wat (voorlopig) de laatste race van het team in het WEC was, eindigde een van de bolides op de derde plek.

"Ons doel is altijd alleen de winst geweest en we geloven dat we deze zege behaald hebben met het best mogelijke resultaat in de gegeven omstandigheden", vertelde SMP Racing-oprichter Boris Rotenberg over het besluit. "Na de laatste race op Le Mans hebben we besloten dat SMP Racing het FIA WEC gaat verlaten. Ons team zal niet racen in 2019/20."

Nog maar zes LMP1-bolides over voor 2019/20

Door het vertrek van SMP Racing blijft er nog maar een karig veld over in de LMP1-klasse. Er zijn door het wegvallen van de twee bolides nog maar zes inschrijvingen over: twee van fabrieksteam en regerend kampioen Toyota, terwijl ook privateers Rebellion en Team LNT met twee auto's aan de start zullen verschijnen.

Je kan die LMP1 klasse net zo goed opdoeken, is een lachertje geworden met zo weinig inschrijvingen.

Misschien schrijf ik mezelf in als Amateur Driver, heb ik toch een 1 op 6 kans om de LMP1 te winnen! :-) Moet ik wel eerst ff de "Silver" status behalen!

Misschien schrijf ik mezelf in als Amateur Driver, heb ik toch een 1 op 6 kans om de LMP1 te winnen! :-) Moet ik wel eerst ff de "Silver" status behalen!

  In de LMP1 zie je geen amateurs, die zie je alleen in de LMP2 en de GTE-AM

Het probleem kan nog groter worden.
Zelfs rebellion twijfelt of het nog twee wagens gaat inzetten voor gans het seizoen.
Ze denken eraan om alleen tijdens Le mans 2 bolides in te zetten.
