Peugeot vanaf 2022-2023 terug in WEC met hypercar

Peugeot keert terug in de langeafstandsracerij. De Franse autofabrikant gaat vanaf het seizoen 2022-2023 met een nog te onthullen hybride hypercar meedoen in de hoogste klasse van het WEC.

De technische reglementen in het WEC gaan na afloop van het huidige seizoen op de schop. De LMP1's zullen daarbij gaan verdwijnen en daarvoor in de plaats komen de Hypercars als hoogste klasse binnen het kampioenschap. Het blijkt een idee dat aanslaat bij de autofabrikanten, die de afgelopen jaren juist vertrokken uit de LMP1. Toyota blijft, terwijl Aston Martin al aankondigde met een op de Valkyrie gebaseerde auto deel te gaan nemen.

Ook de kleine autobouwer Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus kondigde haar entree al aan, terwijl ByKolles Racing ook plannen heeft om deel te nemen. Aan dat lijstje kan dus Peugeot toegevoegd worden. De Franse autofabrikant zal dat echter wel pas in het seizoen 2022-2023 doen. In de loop van 2020 zal het team meer details onthullen over haar deelname, evenals met welke auto ze mee willen doen.

Peugeot won drie keer op Le Mans

Peugeot heeft een rijke geschiedenis in de endurance-racerij en op Le Mans. Drie keer was de fabrikant ook de sterkste in de 24-uursrace: in 1992 en 1993 met de Peugeot 905 EVO 1B, in 2009 met de 908 HDI Fap. Destijds waren David Brabham, Marc Gené en Alexander Wurz de winnaars van de race.

De CEO van het WEC, Gérard Neveu, reageerde verheugd op het nieuws. "Dit is geweldig nieuws voor iedereen in de endurance-racerij. De komst van Peugeot in de nieuwe Hypercar-categorie, naast Aston Martin en Toyota, kan alleen maar meer fabrikanten aanmoedigen om het hoogste niveau van de langeafstandsracerij te bestormen. We zijn enorm blij en vereerd om een deelnemer en merk met zoveel historie en succes als Peugeot te verwelkomen."

Daar wil ik best een weekendje Ardennen, Schwartzwald of midden-Frankrijk voor boeken.
