Monza en Kyalami krijgen plekje op WEC-kalender 2020-21

De FIA WEC zal in het seizoen 2020-21 twee nieuwe locaties bezoeken. In het eerste jaar met het hypercar-reglement reist de klasse onder andere af naar Monza en Kyalami, waardoor er races op vier continenten zijn.

Het WEC zit momenteel midden in haar seizoen 2019-20, maar de kalender voor het volgende seizoen is dus al bekend. Traditiegetrouw zal het seizoen aangevangen worden met een race op Silverstone. Dit jaar was het een vieruursrace, komend jaar zal er terug worden gegrepen op een race van 6 uur. Op zaterdag 5 september 2020 vindt die race plaats. Een maand later staat op Monza de eerste nieuwe race van het jaar op het programma.

Het Italiaanse circuit neemt daarbij de plek in van Shanghai, dat na lange tijd in 2020-21 geen plekje op de kalender gekregen heeft. WEC-baas Gerard Neveu stelt echter dat een terugkeer naar Shanghai in de toekomst niet uitgesloten is. Na races in Fuji en Bahrein staat in februari 2021 de race op het Zuid-Afrikaanse Kyalami op de rol. Het wordt de eerste keer sinds 1984 dat het wereldkampioenschap sportscars naar Kyalami komt.

Na de 6 uur van Kyalami volgen nog drie races: in maart reist het circus af naar Sebring voor een race over 1000 mijlen, een maand later wordt er zes uur lang geracet op Spa-Francorchamps en als afsluiting van het seizoen staat wederom de 24 uur van Le Mans op het programma. De kalender is nog wel voorlopig, totdat het World Motor Sport Council van de FIA in maart 2020 akkoord gaat.
