De Vries test met Toyota: "Vierwielaandrijving en traction control waren geweldig"

Daags na de 8 uur van Bahrein werkte het WEC een rookietest af op het Bahrain International Circuit. Nyck de Vries mocht daarbij in actie komen namens het fabrieksteam van Toyota.

De Vries was een van de drie coureurs die tijdens de testdag voor nieuwkomers in actie mocht komen met de TS050 Hybrid, waarmee Toyota uitkomt in de LMP1-klasse van het WEC. De Nederlander moest de auto delen met Thomas Laurent, de test- en reservecoureur van Toyota Gazoo Racing, en Kenta Yamashita, die als ontwikkelingscoureur aan het fabrieksteam verbonden is.

De Vries kwam tijdens zijn testdag in de TS050 Hybrid tot 43 ronden, eentje minder dan Yamashita en negen meer dan Laurent. Aan het begin van de dag kwamen vaste coureurs Kamui Kobayashi en Brendon Hartley ook kort nog even de baan op om wat data te verzamelen en als referentie te dienen voor de drie nieuwkomers. Na afloop legde De Vries uit dat hij het goed naar zijn zin heeft gehad.

"Ik heb enorm genoten van de dag en ik wil Toyota Gazoo Racing en het WEC bedanken voor deze kans. Ik was verrast door de hoeveelheid grip van deze auto; de vierwielaandrijving en de traction control waren geweldig. Het is een heel neutrale auto om in te rijden en ik paste me aan aan de fuel cuts en de verschillende boost-strategieën. Het was een nieuwe ervaring voor mij en ik heb er erg van genoten."

De Vries maakte afgelopen seizoen zijn debuut in het FIA WEC bij Racing Team Nederland, het team waarvoor hij ook in het seizoen 2019/20 in actie komt. De kampioen van de Formule 2 begon samen met teamgenoten Frits van Eerd en Giedo van der Garde goed aan het seizoen en eindigde in Bahrein op de zesde positie in de LMP2-klasse. Wel raakte Racing Team Nederland hierdoor de koppositie in het kampioenschap kwijt aan Jackie Chan DC Racing.

De Vries was een halve seconde langzamer dan Kenta Yamashita, maar die kreeg wel twee sets banden. De Vries was derde van de dag, Thomas Laurent was nog 5 honderdste sneller. Hij had net als de Vries één bandenset gebruikt
