24 uur van Le Mans bittere noodzaak voor WEC-teams

Het doorgaan van de 24 uur van Le Mans is van levensbelang voor de teams in het World Endurance Championship. Die boodschap droeg WEC-baas Gerard Neveu uit tegenover Reuters. De 88ste editie van de 24 uur van Le Mans is vanwege de coronapandemie reeds verplaatst van 13 en 14 juni naar 19 en 20 september. Het is bittere noodzaak dat het evenement dan ook echt doorgaat.

Neveu: "Kunnen we een normaal evenement organiseren of wordt het een race achter gesloten deuren? Dat is op dit moment onmogelijk te zeggen. Als je de 24 uur van Le Mans organiseert, dan wil je dat daar publiek bij aanwezig kan zijn. De 24 uur van Le Mans is meer dan een evenement. Het is een feest dat je viert met heel veel mensen. De 24 uur van Le Mans is speciaal. Het zou erg frustrerend zijn als er geen toeschouwers bij mogen zijn dit jaar."

Als het evenement überhaupt wel door kan gaan dit jaar. Dat moet, is Neveu stellig. "Als de 24 uur van Le Mans niet plaats kan vinden, dan heeft dat enorme en dramatische gevolgen voor het businessmodel en de stabiliteit van veel teams en deelnemers. Ik heb het niet over de autofabrikanten, zij hebben de capaciteit om een jaar over te slaan. Maar het merendeel van de privé-teams komt dan serieus in de problemen."

    Beste Gerard Neveu, ga er vanuit dat er niets gebeurt in september. Ga er vanuit dat medici een jaar nodig hebben voor een vaccin, gerekend vanaf maart 2020. You do the math. Beste Gerard Neveu, verleg je focus, hou niet vast aan het business model, zoek een plan B.

      @Fibonnaci; irritant toontje wat je gebruikt hoor. Maar kennelijk viroloog? (Ga dan aan het werk en vindt een vaccin..??‍♂️) Maar zonder dollen; wil/denk/verwacht jij nu echt dat we met de rest van de wereld als bange wezels een jaar onder een steen gaan leven tot er een vaccin is? Dit irritante virus gaat in de zomer hopelijk in de ruststand om waarschijnlijk in het najaar weer op te duiken. September is ver weg, de zomer staat voor de deur, de zuidelijke landen gaan straks open voor toeristen en als dat allemaal redelijk goed gaat zie ik geen enkele reden waarom er in september geen LeMans met publiek gereden kan worden. Of Monza F1 met publiek.

    Met publiek zal zeker niet mogen. het is een feest tot en met. Zal een groot inkomstenverlies zijn met 300.000 bezoekers.
