Robin Frijns in 2021 samen met WRT naar het WEC

Robin Frijns rijdt komend seizoen ook in het World Endurance Championship. De Nederlander treedt samen met Team WRT toe tot de serie. Ze zullen met een Oreca 07 aan de start verschijnen en actief zijn in de LMP2-klasse. Frijns zal zijn activiteiten in het WEC combineren met racen voor Envision Virgin in de Formule E.

Over zijn WEC-avontuur zegt de Nederlander: "Ik verheug me op de hernieuwde samenwerking met WRT. We hebben in het verleden gelijk vanaf het begin veel successen geboekt en het doel is om dat nu te herhalen in het WEC." Frijns kent Team WRT uit zijn tijd in de Blancpain Series. Samen wonnen ze onder meer de Blancpain GT-titel in 2015 en de 12 uur van Bathurst in 2018.

Wie de teamgenoten van Frijns worden, is nog niet bekendgemaakt. Het is ook onduidelijk of zijn toetreding tot het WEC gevolgen heeft voor zijn DTM-aspiraties. Vorig jaar eindigde hij nog als derde in de toerwagenserie, maar het is allerminst zeker dat hij in 2021 ook in de DTM nieuwe stijl te bewonderen zal zijn.
