24 uur van Le Mans verplaatst naar 21 en 22 augustus

De 24 uur van Le Mans wordt uitgesteld zodat er fans aanwezig kunnen zijn bij het evenement. Dat heeft de internationale autosportbond FIA bekendgemaakt. De 24 uur van Le Mans stond eigenlijk voor 12 en 13 juni op het programma, maar het evenement is verplaatst naar 21 en 22 augustus.

Door de 24 uur van Le Mans later in de zomer te organiseren hopen het World Endurance Championship en de FIA de mogelijkheid te creëren om publiek toe te laten bij het evenement. Het doel is om (minstens) 50.000 toeschouwers aanwezig te laten zijn bij de race. Vorig jaar vond de 24 uur van Le Mans plaats in september, achter gesloten deuren.

De World Motor Sport Council komt morgen bijeen in Genève en moet de nieuwe datum voor de 24 uur van Le Mans officieel nog bekrachtigen. Een race op 21 en 22 augustus betekent dat het evenement in de zomerstop van de Formule 1 valt. Wel is er dan sprake van overlap met het Amerikaanse IMSA-kampioenschap, al was dat met de vorige datum ook al het geval.
