Penske betreedt WEC met Porsche-fabrieksrijders Nasr en Cameron

Team Penske heeft een LMP2-bolide ingeschreven voor het komende seizoen in het World Endurance Championship. Eigenlijk was het de bedoeling om pas in 2023 toe te treden tot het WEC. Penske is door Porsche aangewezen om het fabrieksteam van het Duitse merk in de LMDh-klasse te gaan runnen. 2022 is een jaar om alvast wat ervaring op te doen.

Porsche-fabrieksrijders Felipe Nasr en Dane Cameron zijn dan ook aangewezen als coureurs, evenals veteraan Emmanuel Collard. Zij zullen een Oreca 07-Gibson tot hun beschikking krijgen. De geruchten dat Team Penske dit jaar al het WEC zou betreden doen al langer de ronde, sinds ze eind vorig jaar met een Oreca 07-Gibson testten op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

De startlijst voor het WEC-seizoen 2022 bevat een recordaantal van 39 inschrijvingen. De naam van Racing Team Nederland ontbreekt. De renstal veroverde vorig jaar de titel in de LMP2-klasse en heeft besloten om komend seizoen een nieuwe uitdaging aan te gaan in het Amerikaanse IMSA-kampioenschap.

Frits van Eerd en Giedo van der Garde racen ook in de Verenigde Staten voor Racing Team Nederland en zij krijgen gezelschap van Dylan Murry. Voor de 24 uur van Daytona van eind deze maand voegt IndyCar-coureur Rinus van Kalmthout zich nog bij dit drietal.
