Dertien Hypercars krijgen toestemming voor deelname in WEC-seizoen 2023

Het aankomende seizoen van het World Endurance Championship (WEC) belooft uiterst spannend te worden. Eerder vandaag kondigde het internationale kampioenschap van het langeafstandsracen maar liefst dertien verschillende teamaanmeldingen aan voor de Hypercar-categorie. Onder andere Ferrari, Porsche, Toyota en Peugeot maken deel uit van de imposante deelnamelijst.

Het heeft er alle schijn van dat het 2023-seizoen van het World Endurance Championship een heus spektakel zal worden. De ogen zijn vooral gericht op de Hypercar-categorie; sinds de introductie van deze raceklasse in 2021, ziet 2023 maar liefst dertien (!) verschillende aanmeldingen voor een deelname in de snelste categorie.

De welbekende autofabrikanten Cadillac, Porsche, Toyota, Ferrari en Peugeot wagen zich erop om een bloedsnelle bolide te ontwikkelen voor de Hypercar-categorie; behalve Cadillac hebben bovenstaande automerken ieder twee teams voor deze raceklasse aangemeld. Naast de bekende namen, zijn ook de teams van Floyd Vanwall Racing, Jota, Proton Competititon en Glickenhaus Racing deel van de grote lijst met Hypercar-inschrijvingen. Daarbij vormen Jota en Proton het contigent privéteams: beiden zetten een Porsche 963 in, waardoor het Duitse merk met een totaalaantal van vier wagens aan de start verschijnt.

Voor de 24 uur van Le Mans, het klapstuk van de WEC-competitie, zijn additionele inschrijvingen optioneel. Het team van Glickenhaus heeft reeds aangekondigd om aldaar een tweede wagen, met startnummer 709, in te zetten. Ook Cadillac zet een tweede bolide in tijdens de enduranceklassieker in Noord-Frankrijk, deze wordt onderhouden door het team Action Express. Mogelijkerwijs brengt het Amerikaanse merk zelfs nog een derde bolide naar Le Mans, dit zou een tweede fabrieksbolide met startnummer 1 moeten worden.

  Het zijn nog steeds minder auto's en teams dan de F1 en jarenlang was Toyota het enige fabrieksteam
  
  Teams komen en gaan veel makkelijker uit het WEC waardoor de klasse niet constant is zoals de F1
