Aankomend weekend wordt de honderdste editie van de 24 uur van Le Mans verreden. Het belooft een groot spektakelstuk te worden met een extreem sterk deelnemersveld, veel Nederlanders en zelfs een NASCAR in de innovatieve klasse. De organisatie heeft ook een grote naam gestrikt om de race te starten.

De organisatie van de race heeft bekend gemaakt dat niemand minder dan LeBron James de wedstrijd in gang mag gaan brengen. De Amerikaanse basketballer mag met de vlag zwaaien en daarmee brengt hij het veld officieel in gang. Het starten van de 24 uur van Le Mans is een eervolle taak. Sinds 1949 mogen bekend gezichten, meestal uit de automobielindustrie, met de vlag zwaaien.

De eerste starter van de race was in 1949 de Franse minister van transport Christian Pineau. In 1954 zwaaide Prins Bernhard met de vlag. James laat aan de organisatie weten trots te zijn: "Het is voor mij een eer dat ik onderdeel mag zijn van dit historische evenement in de autosport en dat ik mag helpen bij het vieren van de honderdste verjaardag van één van de grootste sportevenementen in de wereld."
