LMP2-klasse verdwijnt in 2024, maar niet op Le Mans

Het startveld van het World Endurance Championship zal er vanaf 2024 heel erg anders uitgaan zien. Het toenemende aantal Hypercars en de nieuwe LMGT3-klasse zorgt ervoor dat er geen plek meer is voor de LMP2-klasse. Wel blijven de wagens deelnemen aan de 24 uur van Le Mans.

Aan de vooravond van de 24 uur van Le Mans werd er meer bekend gemaakt over de toekomst van het WEC. Aangezien er vanaf volgend jaar fabrieksteams van BMW, Lamborghini, Alpine en Isotta Fraschini en meerdere nieuwe klantenteams, zal het Hypercar-veld flink gaan groeien. Ook voor de nieuwe LMGT3-klasse is veel interesse. Aangezien het WEC een maximum kent van 38 deelnemers, verdwijnen de LMP2's uit het kampioenschap.

De LMP2's zijn echter niet volledig verleden tijd. De Auotmobile Club de l'Ouest maakte namelijk bekend dat er bij de 24 uur van Le Mans nog wel plek is voor LMP2-teams op de deelnemerslijst. Men liet weten dat in 2024 'minimaal' vijftien LMP2's zullen gaan deelnemen aan de autosportklassieker. De deelnemerslijst van Le Mans is altijd veel langer dan die van het WEC waardoor er plek ontstaat voor meer deelnemers. Tevens heeft de klasse een grote geschiedenis op Le Mans.
