Wickens wint, Giedo van der Garde komt net tekort

Robert Wickens heeft vanmiddag de tweede Renault World Series-race in Silverstone op zijn naam geschreven. Makkelijk ging het echter niet, want de Candees kreeg het zwaar aan de stok met kampioenschapsleider Giedo van der Garde.

Wickens kent een slechte start vanaf pole position en gaat als derde de eerste bocht in, achter Van der Garde en Salvador Duran. Wickens blijft rond de pitstops vijf ronden langer buiten en pakt hiermee belangrijk voordeel. Van der Garde en Duran komen moeizaam door de achterblijvers heen waardoor Wickens vlak voor Van der Garde de baan opkomt na zijn pitstop. De Nederlander pusht Wickens verder de gehele race maar kan uiteindelijk niet dichtbij genoeg komen. Van der Garde finisht uiteindelijk op zes tienden van de Candees als tweede. "Er waren geen blauwe vlaggen", vertelt Van der Garde. "Dat heeft me waarschijnlijk de overwinning gekost. Ik verloor twee seconden doordat ik drie ronden vastzat achter Pablo Sanchez en toen ik mijn pitstop maakte werd ik weer opgehouden. Dat heeft me ook een seconde gekost."

Wickens geeft toe dat hij nog niet alles uit de auto heeft gehaald. "Ik nam niet teveel risico's en er zit nog meer in de auto. Na de pitstops heb ik alles gegeven om weg te rijden bij Giedo maar daarna besloot dat het geen zin had op dat hoge tempo door te blijven rijden. Toen heb ik wat gas terug genomen."

Salvador Duran finisht op een eenzame derde plek, nadat hij in de slotfase terugvalt door versnellingsbakproblemen. Alleen de vierde en vijfde versnelling doen het nog. Ondanks dat het een teleurstellend weekeinde was voor Van der Garde, leidt hij nog steeds het kampioenschap met een voorsprong van 44 punten op Salvador Duran.
