Giedo van der Garde wint op de Hungaroring

Giedo van der Garde heeft vanmiddag de eerste race gewonnen in de World Series by Renault op de Hungaroring. Hij werd op het podium geflankeerd door Julien Jousse en voormalig Masters of F3-winnaar Fabio Carbone. Tijdens een incidentrijke race heeft Van der Garde het niet makkelijk. Julien Jousse is nooit ver weg en finisht uiteindelijk op zeven tienden van de Nederlander.

Oorspronkelijk leek de overwinning voorbehouden aan de 19-jarige Alex Marsoin. Hij leidt ruim voor Van der Garde als hij bestraft wordt voor het maken van een valse start. Marsion krijgt een drive-through-penalty en zal de race niet finishen.

Van der Garde: "We hadden wat geluk met de straf van Marsion, maar hij maakte een fout dus het was terecht. De pitstop-race van morgen kan interessant worden, want ik heb nog 45 seconden push-to-pass over. We zullen zien wat we kunnen doen."

Marcos Martinez lijkt lange tijd op weg naar de derde plek, maar de druk die Carbone op hem zet wordt hem te groot en spint. Hij zal uiteindelijk nog als dertiende finishen. Van der Garde leidt momenteel het kampioenschap met 53 punten voorsprong op de nieuwe nummer twee, Julien Jousse.
