Van der Garde dicht bij titel na zege in Le Mans

Giedo van der Garde mag zich bijna World Series by Renault-kampioen noemen. De Nederlander zegevierde gisteren in race 2 op het circuit van Le Mans en heeft nu een voorsprong van 53 punten op Fabio Carbone met nog twee raceweekenden te gaan. De coureur van P1 Motorsport kan over drie weken de eerste plek veilig stellen in Estoril.

Van der Garde kijkt terug op zijn zege in Le Mans: Hier heb ik echt hard voor moeten knokken. Ik had een geweldige start en kon een prima tempo rijden. Na mijn pitstop kwam ik echter in verkeer, waardoor ik wat tijd verloor. Hierdoor konden Carbone en Guerrieri de aansluiting weer vinden. Omdat bij mijn stop alleen de voorbanden waren gewisseld, had ik een paar ronden lang vreselijke last van overstuur. Ik begon daarop erg agressief in te sturen, om dat te verhelpen. Ik moest vier of vijf ronden lang echt heel verdedigend racen en toen de voorbanden eenmaal wat afgesleten waren, kon ik weer weglopen.

Het is lekker om ook in de tweede seizoenshelft weer te winnen. Het is jammer dat ik zaterdag geen punten scoorde, anders was ik gisteren waarschijnlijk al kampioen geworden. Maar goed, dat hoort bij het racen. In Estoril gaan we er weer vol voor en hopelijk kunnen we dan een mooi feestje gaan vieren.
