Coronel van veldvulling naar podiumkandidaat

Tom Coronel koestert hoge verwachtingen van het eerste seizoen van de nieuwe World Touring Car Cup. De Nederlander testte deze week op het circuit van Zandvoort met zijn Honda Civic van het team van Boutsen Ginion Racing. Die test heeft het gevoel dat er dit jaar mooie dingen mogelijk zijn alleen maar versterkt.

Coronel vertelde aan De Telegraaf: "In het World Touring Car Championship was ik veldvulling, zo eerlijk ben ik wel. Nu ga ik ervan uit dat ik dit seizoen zeker drie keer eerste, drie keer tweede en drie keer derde ga worden. Ik ga meer bekers ophalen dan in de laatste tien jaar."

Het WTCR brengt op 20 en 21 mei een bezoek aan Zandvoort tijdens de Jumbo Racedagen, driven by Max Verstappen. Om op de WTCR-kalender te komen moest er wel 170.000 euro naar de internationale autosportbond FIA worden overgemaakt, waarvoor RTL GP, promotor Eurosport Events en Circuit Zandvoort de handen ineen hebben geslagen.

"Het is een wijs besluit geweest om met de WTCR in het voorprogramma van de Jumbo Racedagen te staan. Er komt veel publiek op af en wij zorgen voor de races naast de demo's van Max. Een win-winsituatie", aldus Coronel.

      Ja, het verschil is ook wel te zien.

      Tim heeft een iets smaller hoofd danTom. Tim is ook een pietsie meer kaal dan Tom heb ik het idee. Verder schelen ze volgens mij ook iets in lichaamsbouw en lengte, al vind ik dat op televisie tricky om goed te kunnen beoordelen.

      Je herkent vooral het verschil in dat Tim Tom probeert na te doen en Tom niet.

      Klopt ik zie ook wel verschil vind Tom wat meer vanuit emotie praten en daardoor wat meer aanwezig is. Ik hou daar wel van. Tim is wat ingetogener... Als ze bij elkaar staan zie je ook wel verschil in uiterlijk waar dat in zit doet er niet toe ;)

    Iedergeval als Coureur uit het goede hout gesneden. Dat dan weer wel... En prettige bijkomstigheid in het geval van Coronel is natuurlijk dat hij dan een integraal helm opheeft..

    Ik denk dat Coronel zeker kans maakt op podiumplaatsen en hier en daar een zege.
    Maar ik denk dat de grote kanshebber komend jaar Team WRT is.

    WRT won de afgelopen twee TCR International Series, de voorganger van de WTCR, met de VW Golf GTI.
    Dit jaar rijden ze met de Audi RS 3 LMS, een auto die afgelopen jaar al als 1 van de beste gold, en door Audi zeer snel en goed wordt doorontwikkeld. Het zou zo maar kunnen zijn dat WRT nóg sterker gaat worden dit seizoen.

    Het zal voor Coronel misschien een plan wezen om volgend seizoen naar dit team over te stappen, ook gezien teambaas Vincent Vosse een goede vriend van hem is.
    Ik kijk uit naar komend seizoen, en hoop dat Coronel goed gaat scoren. Wie weet dat hij het jaar daarna bij een echt kampioenschaps team terecht kan !
