51-jarige Giovanardi maakt opwachting in WTCR

Het veld voor het eerste seizoen van de nieuwe World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) bevat een ware legende. De 51-jarige Fabrizio Giovanardi zal aan de start verschijnen in een Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR van Team Mulsanne. Giovanardi is een meervoudig kampioen in het Brits toerwagenkampioenschap en het Europees toerwagenkampioenschap.

Zijn enige jaar in het World Touring Car Championship sloot hij af op een derde plaats. "Ik wil iedereen bij Romeo Ferraris die dit mogelijk heeft gemaakt bedanken", steekt de Italiaan van wal. "Ik heb recent met de auto mogen rijden en was gelijk onder de indruk. Voor mij betekent dit een comeback op het hoogste niveau wat toerwagens betreft, maar mijn passie en honger voor overwinningen is nog altijd intact."

Giovanardi was succesvol in de karting, Formule 3 en Formule 3000 voordat hij in 1992 de definitieve keuze voor de toerwagens maakte. Al snel won hij races en kampioenschappen in eigen land, Spanje, Duitsland en Europees. De Italiaan reed daarbij vaak met een Alfa Romeo. Hij schreef het ETCC en het BTCC op zijn naam en boekte zeges in het WTCC. Giovanardi keerde vorig jaar terug naar het Italiaanse TCR-kampioenschap, nadat hij ook de Argentijnse TC2000 en de Australische V8 Supercars uit had geprobeerd.
