Monteiro mist de start van het WTCR-seizoen

Tiago Monteiro, de teamgenoot van Tom Coronel bij Boutsen Ginion Racing, moet in het eerste raceweekend van het nieuwe World Touring Car Cup-seizoen verstek laten gaan. De Portugees is nog altijd niet helemaal hersteld van zware crash tijdens een test van vorig jaar. Wanneer hij wel weer fit genoeg is om te racen, is op dit moment niet duidelijk.

Benjamin Lessennes, de test- en reserverijder van het team, zal tot die tijd de honneurs waarnemen. Monteiro: "Ik wist dat dit tot de mogelijkheden behoorde, aangezien het menselijk lichaam per individu verschilt en je dus geen exacte wetenschap of een tijdlijn kunt toepassen. Mijn fysieke conditie is er enorm op vooruit gegaan, maar hetzelfde kan helaas nog niet gezegd worden van mijn zicht. Als gevolg daarvan kan ik nog niet mijn rentree maken."

"Ik ben geweldig behandeld door de medische staf, maar ik kan het risico op dit moment gewoon niet nemen. Ik heb alles gedaan dat binnen mijn mogelijkheden lag, alleen ben ik nog niet helemaal de oude. Natuurlijk is dat teleurstellend, ik wilde dit ongeluk achter me laten en vol frisse moed aan het nieuwe seizoen beginnen. Dat is helaas nog niet mogelijk, maar ik blijf zo hard als ik kan werken aan mijn verdere herstel en zal ondertussen het team en mijn collega's aanmoedigen."

Het WTCR-seizoen gaat in het weekend van 7 en 8 april van start met races in het Marokkaanse Marrakech. Deze week test de toerwagenklasse nog op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona.
