Van Pelt raakte vermoeid in zware duinen

Husqvarna-rijder Robert van Pelt is in de vierde etappe van de Dakar Rally opnieuw in de top vijftig geëindigd. In de etappe van San Salvador de Jujuy naar Tupiza had de organisatie een zwaar gedeelte met duinen opgenomen, waar de rijders flink af moesten zien. "Marc Coma zei gisteren tegen mij dat het een makkelijke dag zou worden. Ik heb hier niets van gemerkt want wat een duinen heb ik gezien. Ook waren ze erg los en dit had tot gevolg dat ik vermoeid raakte. Ik ben zelfs even een keer gestopt om op adem te komen, dit heb ik nog nooit in mijn hele carrière gedaan", vertelde een vermoeide Robert van Pelt na de finish.

Van Pelt heeft nu vier constante etappes gereden en wist met een 44ste plaats wederom in de top vijftig te finishen. Dit had wellicht nog iets beter gekund want samen met een aantal andere rijders zocht hij naar de juiste weg, wat hem veel tijd kostte. "In het roadbook stond dat er een pad moest zijn maar die was er uiteindelijk niet. Ik heb hier zo'n dertig minuten verloren maar gelukkig was ik niet de enige."

Na vier etappes merkt Robert goed dat het deelnemen met de kist toch een stuk zwaarder is dan de twee voorgaande keren. Dit in combinatie met de korte nachten en de wisselende weersomstandigheden, zorgt ervoor dat Robert slim met zijn krachten om moet gaan. "De eerste twee jaren dat ik met de kist op pad ging, verliepen prima. Nu merk ik toch dat ik het mentaal zwaar heb nadat ik de voorgaande twee jaren met een team mee ben geweest en dus veel minder hoefde te doen als ik over de finish kwam. Nu is het vaak om 00.30 uur naar bed en om 04.30 uur er weer uit. De organisatie geeft ons ook weinig mogelijkheden om in het ritme te komen want op de eerste twee dagen was het bloedheet en nu zitten we op hoogte. Ze verzinnen iedere keer weer iets nieuws om het zo zwaar mogelijk te maken."
