Van Kasteren schrijft truckklassement op zijn naam

Gisteren werd in Saoedi-Arabië de laatste etappe van de legendarische Dakar Rally verreden. In de afgelopen weken gebeurde er zeer veel in de Saoedische woestijn en er was tevens veel Nederlands succes. Bij de vrachtwagens ging de overwinning zelfs naar Team De Rooy-coureur Janus van Kasteren.

Van Kasteren begon strijdvaardig aan de rally maar de Iveco-coureur had het zeker niet makkelijk. Ondanks tegenslagen mocht hij gisteren na de slotetappe wel juichen. Van Kasteren is van Jan de Rooy, Gerard de Rooy en Hans Stacey de vierde Nederlandse winnaar bij de trucks. Samen met zijn bijrijders Marcel Snijders en Darek Rodewald nam hij plaats op het hoogste treetje van het podium. De Tsjech Martin Macik werd tweede en Van Kasterens teamgenoot Martin van den Brink werd derde.

De Nederlandse coureurs waren dit jaar oppermachtig in het truckklassement. Naast Van Kasteren en Van der Brink eindigde ook Mitchel van den Brink, Ben van de Laar en Richard de Groot in de top tien. Het klassement bij de vrachtwagens was dit jaar spannender dan ooit. Vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne ontbrak het team van Kamaz en lag de strijd open. Van Kasterens grootste concurrent Ales Loprais moest de rally verlaten vanwege zijn betrokkenheid bij een verdrietig incident waarbij een toeschouwer overleed.

Beetje jammer dat met het ongeluk van Loprais en de pech van Martin van den Brink de angel uit de strijd werd gehaald. Desalniettemin een goede prestatie van van Kasteren en team de Rooy. Ook de andere Nederlandse truckers hebben mooie dingen laten zien, waaronder dagoverwinningen (Martin en Mitchel van den Brink, Pascal de Baar).

Ook een mooie strijd bij de motoren, continu dichtbij elkaar.
Bij de auto's was de strijd al snel gestreden, met Al-Attiyah die een flinke voorsprong pakte terwijl alle concurrenten problemen hadden. Had eigenlijk een mooie strijd met Loeb moeten worden, die had de smaak goed te pakken, maar helaas teveel tijd verloren in het begin van de Rally.
