Sainz senior ondergaat hersteltraject na flinke crash in Dakar

De gevolgen van de zware crash van Carlos Sainz senior tijdens de negende etappe van de Dakar Rally zijn, nu blijkt, zwaarder dan gedacht. Eerder deze week maakte de rallycoureur publiekelijk bekend twee gebroken rugwervels aan de crash te hebben overgehouden.

Tijdens de negende etappe van de wereldbekende Dakar Rally crashte Carlos Sainz senior tijdens een poging om een zandduin te overbruggen. De afsprong vanaf de hoge zandduin was groter dan gedacht, waardoor de Audi-bolide van Sainz senior via een harde klap frontaal op de ondergrond terechtkwam.

De zestigjarige rallybekende en tevens vader van de gelijknamige Formule 1-coureur werd vervolgens met een helikopter vanaf de locatie weggevlogen om door een medisch team op verwondingen gecontroleerd te worden. Sainz senior was het er echter niet mee eens, want hij instrueerde de piloot om hem weer terug bij z’n auto af te droppen. Helaas mochten zijn dappere poging om na de crash de etappe af te maken niet baten; even later viel Sainz senior alsnog uit.

Een paar dagen na het einde van de Dakar-rally maakte Sainz senior via social media bekend dat de gevolgen van zijn zware klapper toch grotere gevolgen had dan werd gedacht. Op Instagram vertelt hij: "Tijdens mijn terugtocht van de Dakar Rally bleef ik als gevolge van het incident langer problemen met m’n rug ervaren dan normaal. Na medisch advies heb ik besloten om verder onderzoek te laten doen naar mijn blessure. Helaas was het nieuws niet goed, want ik heb twee rugwervels gebroken. Het positieve is dat beide wervels in stabiele conditie verkeren. Ik zal het mijn prioriteit maken om zo snel mogelijk te herstellen."
