De Rooy is helemaal klaar met Zuid-Amerika

Gerard de Rooy weet nog niet of hij volgend jaar meedoet aan de Dakar Rally, maar tussen de regels door laat hij blijken dat hij het helemaal gehad heeft met de locatie van het evenement. De Dakar hoort wat hem betreft in Afrika en niet in Zuid-Amerika. Tel daar de talloze problemen met het parkoers uit de afgelopen jaren bij op en dan krijg je een twijfelende De Rooy.

De Iveco-coureur was woensdag in Loon op Zand, waar Dakar-organisator ASO de plannen voor 2018 presenteerde. De Rooy verklaarde aan RTL GP en Omroep Brabant: "Ik weet nog niet of volgend jaar weer meedoe. We zijn nog druk in onderhandeling met Iveco om het team eventueel op te splitsen. Dat we naar Dakar en de Africa Race of misschien wel de Silkway rally gaan. Dat wordt volgende week allemaal besloten."

"Ik heb een hard hoofd in Peru. Een paar jaar geleden hebben ze Peru eruit gehaald vanwege de natuurrampen en het regent daar nog steeds. Je hoort er nog weinig van, maar er zitten daar een paar duizend mensen zonder huis. Ze zeggen wel dat het doorgaat maar dat zeiden ze toen ook, en in juli of augustus was het 'jongens, we gaan niet'."

"Ik denk dat er dan heel veel teams niet naar Dakar gaan. Team De Rooy zal dan één van de eersten zijn die zegt: we gaan helemaal niet. En zo zijn er nog tien andere, goede Nederlandse teams die dezelfde conclusie zullen trekken als ik. Die hebben het gewoon gehad met de hoogte, de regen en het weinige aantal kilometers."

"Ik roep al een paar jaar dat we ergens anders naartoe moeten. Waar is aan de organisatie, je kan naar de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, daar zijn genoeg landen in de buurt waar je kunt rijden maar dat brengt natuurlijk minder op. Zuid-Amerika houdt gewoon een keer op met al dat gedoe wat daar speelt. De afgelopen jaren was het steeds slechter, steeds korter. Regen... Dingen die vind ik gewoon helemaal niets met de rally te maken hebben. Dat nekt veel mensen. Veel mensen zeggen nu al 'ik ga sowieso niet. ik ga iets anders doen, de Silkway of Marokko Rally of iets dergelijks. Dakar kan de boom in'."

Dakar MOET terug naar Afrika.Ik zeg het al jaren. De onveilige landen gewoon links laten liggen. Er zijn genoeg routes daar waar je wel wat mee kan.

  Jammer alleen dat er niet veel veilige landen meer over zijn. Terrorisme ligt eenvoudig om de hoek, dus ik begrijp heel goed dat de organisatie niet de verantwoordelijkheid op zich wil nemen. De Rooij zou dat zelf ook niet doen.

  Eens dat Dakar eigenlijk naar Afrika moet, maar daar is het op veel plaatsen niet veilig.
  ITT wat jij zegt Darlos, Zuid Amerika is niet zozeer onveilig, maar het weer in de Andes is van december tot april erg onvoorspelbaar. Dat betekent dat je in die periode gewoon geen rally kunt plannen in Peru, Bolivia en Noord Argentinië/ Noord Chili.

  @Zucht: Ik denk dat Darlos de onveilige landen in Afrika bedoeld (Mali/Senagal e.d.). Echter, de grootste reden was volgens mij de dreiging van IS toentertijd.
  
  Blijft een lastige dit, zelf vind ik het gezeik met weer ook teveel afleiden in de huidige Dakar rally's, erg jammer. Waarom niet in Saoedi Arabië/Oman/UEA ofzo?

  klopt @Sparrow. Ik doel op onveilige landen in Afrika waar de Dakar vroeger voorbij kwam. Midden-Oosten is ook een optie (de oliestaatjes)...zolang er maar veel woestijnzand is en géén regen.

  Als ze daar een rallycross circuit neerleggen zou ie het zo doen. Gerard leende voor een manche van het EK WRX op Valkenswaard al eens de Citroen van Liam Doran, toen regerend kampioen, werd er geloof ik vierde mee ;)
