Erik van Loon slaat Dakar een jaartje over

Erik van Loon heeft de knoop doorgehakt: hij zal niet deelnemen aan Dakar 2018. De sterke groei van zijn bedrijf vereist al zijn aandacht. Hierdoor is een goede voorbereiding op de rally niet mogelijk. Van Loon heeft hier lang over nagedacht en verschillende aspecten in zijn besluit meegenomen.

"Ik heb lang getwijfeld of ik zou gaan", vertelt Van Loon. "Eerst was het de terugkeer naar Bolivia die me tegenstond. Ik heb geen problemen met de hoogte, maar de regen en modder die daarmee gepaard gaan staan me ontzettend tegen. Toen de organisatie de route bekend maakte, zag dat er een stuk beter uit met de terugkeer van Peru. Daarnaast realiseerde ik me dat er dit jaar een aantal zakelijke uitdagingen op me af zouden komen. Naast de bouw van een nieuwe locatie in Son groeit ons bedrijf ontzettend hard. Het vergt enorm veel aandacht en tijd om dit allemaal in goede banen te leiden en dat staat een degelijke voorbereiding in de weg."

"Dakar is niet alleen het rijden van een rally in januari. Dakar is topsport! We zijn er als team het hele jaar mee bezig. Veel trainen, zodat we fysiek in orde zijn, het rijden van een aantal rally's en het prepareren van het materiaal. Ondanks dat het topsport is, blijft het voor mij een hobby. Gaan we dan stoppen? Absoluut niet! We gaan zeker door en we rijden waarschijnlijk nog 1 of 2 kleinere rally's dit jaar, maar geen Dakar. Met pijn in mijn hart neem ik de beslissing om niet te gaan."

Niet alleen voor hen, maar ook voor onze trouwe sponsoren en zeker niet te vergeten de duizenden fans die zich door de jaren heen achter ons hebben geschaard. Van Loon Racing wordt vervolgd!"

Van Loon is niet de eerste Nederlandse topper die aangeeft Dakar volgend jaar over te slaan. Eerder liet Gerard de Rooy al weten dat hij het evenement in 2018 links laat liggen.
