Na een jaar afwezigheid keert Bernhard ten Brinke terug in de Dakar Rally. Met absoluut topmateriaal en een nieuwe navigator wil de coureur uit Zeddam zijn beste prestatie verbeteren. Bernhard ten Brinke eindigde in 2015 als 7e in Le Dakar en won in 2016 de proloog in Buenos Aires. "Ik wilde alleen terugkeren als het totale pakket 100 procent klopt. En dat is het geval."

Bernhard ten Brinke is op weg naar de 40ste Dakar Rally opnieuw de samenwerking aangegaan met Overdrive Racing. Voor de Dakar Rally 2018 staat een Toyota Hilux klaar in de nieuwste specificaties. De Nederlander krijgt de beschikking over hetzelfde materiaal als zijn teamgenoten en oud-winnaars Nasser Al-Atiyah en Giniel de Villiers.

"Om mee te kunnen strijden om een topklassering moet je gewoon over het beste materiaal kunnen beschikken. Het niveau is zo hoog, dat het verschil wordt gemaakt in de details", benadrukt Bernhard ten Brinke. "De Toyota Hilux heeft de afgelopen jaren bewezen een absolute top-auto te zijn en Overdrive Racing is één van de beste teams. Ik ben blij met deze hernieuwde samenwerking."

Bernhard ten Brinke maakt zijn Dakar comeback met een nieuwe navigator aan zijn zijde: Stéphane Prévot. De Belg startte in liefst 174 WRC-wedstrijden, waarvan het merendeel in dienst van officiële fabrieksteams, en heeft zich de laatste seizoenen toegelegd op woestijnrally's. "Navigeren is de laatste jaren steeds belangrijker geworden in de Dakar. Dan is het natuurlijk geweldig om een ervaren navigator als Stéphane naast je te hebben zitten."

Om 6 januari 2018 optimaal aan de start te komen van de 40ste Dakar Rally heeft Bernhard ten Brinke samen met Overdrive Racing een intensief voorbereidingsprogramma samengesteld. Het duo Ten Brinke/Prévot rijdt van 31 augustus tot 3 september de Baja Polen, gevolgd door de Rallye du Maroc (4-10 oktober), mogelijk nog aangevuld met de Baja Portalegre in Portugal.

"Ik wil niets aan het toeval overlaten op weg naar deze bijzondere 40ste Dakar Rally. Mijn doel is om minimaal te gaan voor een top 5-klassering", motiveert hij zijn uitgebreide programma, dat ook nog wordt gecombineerd met enkele WRC en nationale rally’s. "Ik vind het echt jammer dat ik niet zal strijden met Erik van Loon, nu hij heeft besloten om niet te starten in de Dakar 2018. Ik zal in ieder geval alles geven om de Nederlandse eer in het auto-klassement hoog te houden."
