Smits navigeert zich vakkundig door duinen

Motorcoureur Maikel Smits heeft de eerste lading duinen in Dakar 2018 goed verteerd. De debutant liet in de derde etappe de 34ste tijd noteren en was daarmee de beste Nederlander. Hij gaf ongeveer een half uur toe op etappewinnaar Sam Sutherland. Smits vertelde aan het Brabants Dagblad: "Ik weet nog niet goed waar ik ongeveer thuishoor, maar deze plek voelt wel oké. Ik rijd niet boven mijn kunnen."

De 31-jarige Nederlander vervolgt: "Ik ben er veel voorbij gereden, maar ik heb ook geprofiteerd van andere rijders. Door steeds zicht te houden op degene die voor me reed, kon ik zien waar die afremde en gas gaf en welke route hij koos. Zo kun je iets meer snelheid maken en er naartoe rijden. Op de goede momenten ging ik er voorbij en kon ik weer bij de volgende aanpikken. Het is niet zomaar blind achter een ander aan rijden; je moet wel zelf goed blijven opletten en zorgen dat je niet per ongeluk de navigatiefouten maakt die een ander maakt. Met navigeren zat ik steeds spot on."

Smits klom naar een 37ste plaats in de tussenstand. "Ik kijk nog niet echt naar het klassement. Mijn doelstelling de finish te halen, heb ik nog niet bijgesteld. Het gaat goed, maar het is nog steeds maar het begin. De etappe van morgen begint met een massastart, waarbij we met vijftien motoren tegelijk vertrekken. Daar zit ook het langste stuk zand en duinen ooit in. Laat ik daar eerst maar eens doorheen zien te komen en dan kijken we daarna wel weer verder."
