Bijltjesdag voor Nederlandse Dakar-deelnemers

Het contingent Nederlanders in Dakar is na de loodzware vierde etappe verder afgenomen. Vrachtwagenchauffeur Martin van den Brink heeft bijvoorbeeld de strijd moeten staken. Bij het vijfde waypoint noteerde hij nog de vijfde tussentijd, daarna stapelden de problemen zich op.

Een kapotte stabilisatorslang was daar waarschijnlijk de oorzaak van. In eerste instantie nam Janus van Kasteren zijn teamgenoot nog op sleeptouw, maar het laatste deel van de etappe was te listig om een truck doorheen te slepen. Bovendien begon de truck van Van den Brink steeds meer kwaaltjes te vertonen.

Ook voor Ebert Dollevoet kwam er een einde aan zijn Dakar-avontuur voor dit jaar. Tijdens de vierde etappe informeerde een monteur hem van de beslissing van de organisatie om hem uit de wedstrijd te halen omdat hij in de derde etappe te veel waypoints gemist had. Dollevoet kreeg geen starttijd voor de vijfde etappe toebedeeld.

Eerder was ook de equipe van vrachtwagencoureur Ed Wigman uitgevallen. Zij waren in de derde etappe al zwaar gecrasht en de schade bleek te groot om hun weg te vervolgen.
