Podium nog binnen bereik voor Ten Brinke

Op de één na langste special van de Dakar Rally 2018 koos Bernhard ten Brinke de aanval. Op het slopende parcours van bijna 500 km passeerde de Nederlandse fabrieksrijder van Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa vele concurrenten om uiteindelijk dubbel beloond te worden. Naast een knappe vierde plaats in het dagklassement werd ook in het algemeen klassement een plaats buit gemaakt: van vijf naar vier!

"Het tweede deel van de marathonetappe was me er wel eentje", meldde Bernhard ten Brinke onderweg naar het bivak. "Een lange en erg zware stage. Al moet ik zeggen dat Michel en ik nog behoorlijk fit zijn." Dit rit van Uyuni naar Tupiza bestond uit een loodzware cocktail van veel verschillende ondergronden. "Snelle zandwegen, off road tracks, duinen, stukken met kamelengras en de nodige doorwadingen en drooggevallen rivieren."

Vanaf de eerste kilometer klokte de Nederlandse Toyota-fabrieksrijder met zijn navigator Michel Perin top vijf tijden. In hun aanvalsdrift passeerden ze meerdere andere equipes, onder meer teamgenoot Giniel de Villiers, de man die in het algemeen klassement boven Bernhard stond geklasseerd. "Zaterdag hebben Michel en ik alle problemen aan de auto kunnen herstellen, dus ook de ruitenwissers. Dat zorgde ervoor dat we vandaag direct in een lekker ritme zaten."

Op het zeer veeleisende parcours sneed de Toyota Hilux als een warm mes door de boter. "Man, wat een geweldige wagen is dit toch. Zo sterk en met een geweldige wegligging", genoot Bernhard ten Brinke. Michel Perin bleek opnieuw 'spot on' bij het vinden van de lastige waypoints, zodat opnieuw een ijzersterk resultaat kon worden bijgeschreven.

"We zijn er echt voor gaan zitten vandaag", verklapte de Nederlandse Toyota-coureur. "Vierde vandaag is geweldig, maar nog mooier is dat we goede zaken hebben gedaan voor het algemeen klassement. Eén plek omhoog naar plaats vier. Daar zijn we heel blij mee."

Ten Brinke en Perin passeerden hiermee hun Toyota-teamgenoot Giniel de Villiers in het algemeen klassement, terwijl de etappe werd gewonnen door Carlos Sainz. Het gat met nummer drie algemeen Stéphane Peterhansel bedraagt ruim negen minuten, de voorsprong op nummer 5 Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) is iets meer dan veertien minuten.
