Negende etappe geschrapt vanwege regenval

De negende etappe van Dakar 2018 gaat niet door. De etappe die de karavaan vandaag van Tupiza naar Salta zou voeren is geschrapt vanwege erbarmelijke weersomstandigheden in de regio. Rondom Tupiza zou er vanwege de vele regenval wateroverlast zijn, waardoor het vooral voor de servicevoertuigen niet mogelijk is om in het bivak Tupiza te geraken.

Organisator ASO heeft nog gezocht naar alternatieven, maar uiteindelijk is zondag besloten om de negende etappe in zijn geheel niet door te laten gaan. Als gevolg zal de Dakar-karavaan maandag koers zetten richting Salta, waar dinsdag de tiende etappe van start zal gaan. "Er is een dreiging van overstromingen en onweersbuien. We willen geen enkel risico nemen", aldus wedstrijdleider Marc Coma.

Bolivia worden al dagen geteisterd door slechte weersomstandigheden. Maandag steekt de Dakar Rally onderweg naar Salta de grens met Argentinië over en zal de rally volgens de ASO vanaf dinsdag weer onder normale omstandigheden kunnen worden hervat.
