Ton van Genugten boekt tweede etappezege

Team De Rooy Iveco deed goede zaken in de tiende etappe van Dakar 2018. Ton van Genugten schreef zijn tweede ritzege bij en klom naar de vierde plaats in het klassement. Federico Villagra werd op 33 seconden achter Van Genugten tweede en halveerde in het klassement zijn achterstand op Eduard Nikolaev. "Ik wilde eigenlijk niet winnen vandaag, maar ik zag de Kamazzen staan en dacht 'dan moet het toch maar'. Die tijd kan ik goed gebruiken", aldus Van Genugten.

Er gebeurde veel in de 373 kilometer proef tussen Salta en Belén. Motorrijders raakten de weg kwijt, auto's gingen kapot en ook bij de trucks waren er grote verschuivingen. Al vroeg in de etappe zag Van Genugten, die als zesde startte, twee Kamazzen met lekke banden staan. En even later ook de derde. "Ik ben heel voorzichtig over de stenen gereden om niet ook lek te rijden. Maar ik heb daarna wel het gas erop gezet."

Waar Team De Rooy dinsdag een goede dag kende, verloren de coureurs van Kamaz kostbare tijd. Zowel Airat Mardeev als klassementsleider Eduard Nikolaev reden hun banden lek op de scherpe stenen en verloren daardoor kostbare tijd. Nikolaev gaf aan de finish 22 minuten toe op de trucks van Team De Rooy, waardoor zijn voorsprong op Villagra nu nog maar 24 minuten bedraagt. Mardeev verloor 24 minuten en werd daardoor in het algemeen klassement gepasseerd door Van Genugten, die ten koste van de Tsjech Martin Macik meteen ook door wist te schuiven naar de vierde plek.

Met nog vier etappes te gaan deze rally heeft Van Genugten weer zicht op het podium. Zijn achterstand op de als derde geklasseerde Siarhei Viazovich - die dinsdag op 11 minuten achterstand de derde tijd liet noteren - bedraagt iets minder dan 20 minuten.

Van Genugten gaat het niet winnen, hopelijk nog wel een podium.
Dan moet Villagra het maar doen voor Team de Rooy, dan zit er nog een beetje een NL tintje aan :)
