Hernia houdt Gerard de Rooy uit Dakar Rally 2020

Gerard de Rooy keert dit jaar toch niet terug in de Dakar Rally. De Nederlander zou aanvankelijk gewoon van start gaan in Saoedi-Arabië, maar een hernia gooit roet in het eten voor de tweevoudig winnaar.

De Rooy won de Dakar Rally in 2012 en 2016, terwijl hij ook in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017 en 2019 op het podium wist te eindigen. In 2010 moest hij de uitputtingsslag, die toen in Zuid-Amerika werd verreden, al eens overslaan doordat hij daarvoor breuken in zijn rug opliep. Dat was ook de reden dat hij in 2011 al vroeg uitviel. Nu is hij dus getroffen door een hernia, waardoor hij de editie van 2020 moet laten schieten.

"Doordat bovenin mijn rug wervels vastzitten, wordt het onderin meer belast", verklaart De Rooy op de Facebook-pagina van Team De Rooy. "Hierdoor is een hernia ontstaan. In het dagelijks leven heb ik er weinig last van. Het is goed onder controle en ik kan vrijwel alles, maar de klappen opvangen in een rally is wel een probleem." Dat merkte De Rooy vooral tijdens een test in Marokko.

Uiteindelijk zal hij een operatie ondergaan aan de hernia, waardoor deelname aan Dakar uitgesloten is. De Rooy zal wel afreizen naar Saoedi-Arabië, zo kondigde het team aan op Facebook. Team De Rooy staat daar met Janus van Kasteren, Vick Versteijnen, Albert Llovera en Michiel Becx aan de start en De Rooy zal hen in het Midden-Oosten van advies voorzien.

Zijn pa rookte twee pakkies zware gauloises tijdens een etappe, was te zwaar en had verder nergens last van.

  Zijn pa is dan ook niet met een truck die 100 kmh ging op zijn kant gegaan in de Silkway Rally, want daar is alle ellende met zijn rug mee begonnen
