Sainz slaat dubbelslag tijdens derde etappe auto's, Ten Brinke net in top 10

Carlos Sainz heeft goede zaken gedaan tijdens de derde etappe van de Dakar Rally bij de auto's. De Spanjaard won de etappe en nam daardoor ook de leiding in het klassement over van Orlando Terranova.

De derde etappe van Dakar, met Neom als start- en finishplaats, kende een special stage van 427 kilometer. Die afstand wist Sainz in 3 uur, 48 minuten en 1 seconde af te leggen. Daarmee was de winnaar van 2018 drieënhalve minuut sneller dan Nasser Al-Attiyah en ruim vier minuten sneller dan Jakub Przygonski. In het klassement nam de vader van McLaren-coureur Carlos Sainz junior tevens de leiding over.

Achter Przygonski was Yasir Seaidan de sterke nummer 4, terwijl Fernando Alonso zich met een mooie vijfde plek revancheerde voor de crash die hij op maandag had. Yazeed Al Rajhi legde beslag op de zesde plek, voor recordwinnaar Stephane Peterhansel, Terranova en Giniel de Villiers. De tiende positie was voor de vierde fabriekscoureur van Toyota: de Nederlander Bernhard ten Brinke. Hij gaf ruim een kwartier toe op Sainz.

Ten Brinke achtste in klassement, Van Loon twaalfde

Met de tiende plaats schoof Ten Brinke wel wat op in het algemeen klassement. Daarin staat hij nu achtste met een achterstand van 33 minuten en 23 seconden op leider Sainz. De Spanjaard van Mini heeft bijna vijf minuten voorsprong op Al-Attiyah, terwijl Terranova naar de derde plaats is gezakt.

Erik van Loon is achter Ten Brinke de tweede Nederlander: hij werd twaalfde in de derde etappe en staat ook twaalfde in het klassement. Tim Coronel reed vandaag de 28ste tijd en staat nu op P24, terwijl Peter van Merksteijn in de daguitslag en het klassement 31ste is. Ook Maik Willems staat nog in de top 40, ondanks een 44ste tijd op de klassementsproef van vandaag.
