Peterhansel wint nipt van Al-Attiyah, Sainz ziet voorsprong teruglopen

Stephane Peterhansel heeft met een klein verschil de elfde etappe van Dakar bij de auto's weten te winnen. De Fransman was na bijna 380 kilometer slechts 10 seconden sneller dan Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Beide mannen deden goede zaken in het algemeen klassement. Voorafgaand aan de voorlaatste etappe van Dakar 2020 stonden Peterhansel en Al-Attiyah op ruim 18 minuten achterstand, maar ten opzichte van leider Carlos Sainz wisten ze ruim 8 minuten te winnen. De ritwinst ging uiteindelijk met slechts tien seconden verschil naar Peterhansel, die zijn vierde ritzege van het jaar pakte.

Al-Attiyah werd dus tweede, maar behoudt met minimaal verschil de tweede positie in het algemeen klassement. Hij verdedigt in de laatste rit een voorsprong van zes seconden op Peterhansel. Samen zullen zij de jacht inzetten op Sainz. De Spanjaard werd derde in etappe 11 en gaat de laatste rit in met een voorsprong van ruim tien minuten op zijn belangrijkste concurrenten.

Achter de top 3 zette Bernhard ten Brinke in de etappe van vandaag een keurige vierde tijd neer. Hij had ruim 10 minuten meer nodig dan winnaar Peterhansel. In het klassement bezet hij nu de zesde positie, want zowel Ten Brinke als teamgenoot Giniel de Villiers ging in het klassement voorbij aan Orlando Terranova. De Villiers reed de zesde tijd van de dag, achter Jakub Przygonski, terwijl Terranova ruim 37 minuten verloor.

In het algemeen klassement bezet Yazeed Al Rajhi nog altijd de vierde positie, nadat hij in de elfde etappe de zevende tijd reed. Daarmee bleef hij Fernando Alonso wel voor. De tweevoudig Formule 1-kampioen herstelde zich prima van zijn dubbele koprol in de tiende etappe en noteerde de achtste tijd. In het algemeen klassement staat hij op de dertiende positie.
